Samuel was born in 1845 in India.1  Samuel's father was Rev Robert Cotton Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Sewell.  His paternal grandparents were Rev James Mather and Ann Speakman. He had five brothers and a sister, named Cotton, James, Richard, Robert, Charles and Catharine.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
