Cotton's father was Rev Robert Cotton Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Sewell.  His paternal grandparents were Rev James Mather and Ann Speakman. He had five brothers and a sister, named James, Richard, Robert, Samuel, Charles and Catharine.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 48 in January 1882 in London.¹
