Catharine's father was Rev Robert Cotton Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Sewell.  Her paternal grandparents were Rev James Mather and Ann Speakman. She had six brothers named Cotton, James, Richard, Robert, Samuel and Charles.  She was the second youngest of the seven children.  She died at the age of 13 in June 1858 in Tonbridge.²
