James was born in 1837 in India.1  James' father was Rev Robert Cotton Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Sewell.  His paternal grandparents were Rev James Mather and Ann Speakman. He had five brothers and a sister, named Cotton, Richard, Robert, Samuel, Charles and Catharine.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 72 in 1909.

‌James and Agnes were married in a religious ceremony on October 24th, 1864 in Ontario.2  They had three sons and a daughter, named Robert, James, Charles and Elizabeth.
