Rose was born in 1870 in Eccles.1   Rose's father was James Chadwick Mather and her mother was Sarah Dickinson.  Her paternal grandparents were James Chadwick Mather and Sarah Charlton. She had three brothers and five sisters, named James, Francis, Chadwick, Elizabeth, Sarah, Amelia, Amy and Blanche.  She was the eighth oldest of the nine children.
