James was born in March 1857 in Ashton-under-Lyne.1  James' father was James Chadwick Mather and his mother was Sarah Dickinson.  His paternal grandparents were James Chadwick Mather and Sarah Charlton. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Francis, Chadwick, Elizabeth, Sarah, Amelia, Amy, Rose and Blanche.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
