Robert's father was John Mather and his mother was Margaret Salisbury. His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Jane Entwistle. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Ralph, John, Albert, Harry, Mary, Margaret and Rosella. He was the sixth oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 1 in October 1888 in Blackburn.³
