Robert's father was John Mather and his mother was Mary Harrison.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Green. He had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Thomas, John, Richard, Betty, Mary, Jane, Ellen and Ann.  He was the oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 1 in October 1815 in Atherton.  He was buried on October 26th, 1815 in Chowbent.²
