Jane was born on January 25th, 1823 in Atherton and her baptism took place on March 16th, 1823 in Chowbent.1  Jane's father was John Mather and her mother was Mary Harrison.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Green. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Robert, John, Thomas, John, Richard, Betty, Mary, Ellen and Ann.  She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
