Peter was born in March 1787 in Breightmet and his baptism took place on March 11th, 1787 at Turton Chapel.1  Peter's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Betty Thornley. He had four brothers and three sisters, named James, John, Thomas, Richard, Jane, Betty and Mercy.  He was the youngest of the eight children.  He died at 2 months old in May 1787 in Breightmet.  He was buried on May 27th, 1787 at Turton Chapel.2
