Matthew was born on May 3rd, 1856 in Horwich and his baptism took place there on July 6th, 1856.1 2  Matthew's father was William Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Rutter (nee Hayes).  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Alice Calderbank. He had two brothers named William and Robert.  He was the youngest of the three children. He had a half-sister named Alice.  He died at the age of 85 on January 24th, 1942 in Alberta.  His burial was in Alberta.3 4
