Mary's father was John Mather and her mother was Catherine Smith.  Her paternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. She had three brothers and three sisters, and also two siblings of unknown gender, named James, John, Joseph, Margaret, Catherine, Elizabeth, <child> and <child>.  She was the oldest of the nine children.
