Elizabeth was born in March 1878 in Bolton.1  Elizabeth's father was John Mather and her mother was Catherine Smith.  Her paternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. She had three brothers and three sisters, named James, John, Joseph, Mary, Margaret and Catherine.  She was the third youngest of the seven children.
