John's father was John Mather and his mother was Catherine Smith.  His paternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. He had two brothers and four sisters, named James, Joseph, Mary, Margaret, Catherine and Elizabeth.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.
