James was born in March 1873 in Bolton.1  James' father was John Mather and his mother was Catherine Smith.  His paternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. He had two brothers and four sisters, named John, Joseph, Mary, Margaret, Catherine and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
