Martha's father was William Mather and his mother was Mary Warburton. His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Betty (Elizabeth) Barlow. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Richard, James, John, Samuel, Elizabeth, Mary and Ellen. He had an adopted brother named Thomas.
