Margaret was born in December 1856 in Chowbent.1  Margaret's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Ellen Grundy.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Mary Harrison. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Alfred, Albert, Elizabeth and Ada.  She was the oldest of the five children.
