Elizabeth was born in June 1859 in Chowbent.1  Elizabeth's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Ellen Grundy.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Mary Harrison. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Alfred, Albert, Margaret and Ada.  She was the second oldest of the five children.
