Margaret was born in July 1811 in Breightmet and her baptism took place on July 21st, 1811 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Margaret's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Margaret Thompson.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Thornley. She had a brother and a sister, named Henry and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the three children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named John and Ann.  She died whilst giving birth at the age of 30 in January 1842 in Darcy Lever.  She was buried on January 5th, 1842 in Little Lever.2 2

‌Margaret and James were married in a religious ceremony on September 18th, 1836 at St. Leonard (Middleton) witnessed by Edmund Collinge.3  They had a son and three daughters, named Samuel, Alice, Mary and Hannah.
