Knowles' father was Abraham Mather and his mother was Betty Knowles.  His paternal grandparents were William (Will) Mather and Betty Beswick. He had two brothers and a sister, named John, Abram and Alice.  He was the second youngest of the four children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Eli, George and Millison.  He died at the age of 58 on March 9th, 1903 in Blackburn.²
