John was born in September 1838 in Birtle.1  John's father was Abraham Mather and his mother was Betty Knowles.  His paternal grandparents were William (Will) Mather and Betty Beswick. He had two brothers and a sister, named Knowles, Abram and Alice.  He was the oldest of the four children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Eli, George and Millison.
