John's father was Abraham Mather and his mother was Alice Gerrard. He had two brothers and four sisters, named John, Matthew, Margaret, Peggy, Betty and Betty.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 1 in June 1765 in WestLeigh.  He was buried on June 11th, 1765 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).¹
