John was born in 1880 in Bolton.1  John's father was William Mather (Bibby) and his mother was Mary Ann Young.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Harriet Bibby. He had a brother and eight sisters, named William, Emma, Harriet, Sarah, Ada, Florence, Alice, Nellie and Bertha.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
