William's father was William Mather (Bibby) and his mother was Mary Ann Young.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Harriet Bibby. He had a brother and eight sisters, named John, Emma, Harriet, Sarah, Ada, Florence, Alice, Nellie and Bertha.  He was the fourth youngest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 1 in March 1891 in Bolton.²
