Ellen, known as Nellie, was born in December 1896 in Bolton.1  Nellie's father was William Mather (Bibby) and her mother was Mary Ann Young.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Harriet Bibby. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named John, William, Emma, Harriet, Sarah, Ada, Florence, Alice and Bertha.  She was the second youngest of the ten children.
