John's father was Berry (Bury) Mather and his mother was Ellen (Nelly) Burton. His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Eckersley. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Nathan, Reuben, Bury, Nancy, Ann and Sarah. He was the third oldest of the seven children.
