James was born in June 1823 in Radcliffe and his baptism took place on September 14th, 1823 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).1 2  James' father was Miles Mather and his mother was Mary Hornsby.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Melling. He had a brother and a sister, named Benjamin and Mary. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named John, James, Mary and Isabella.  He died at 5 months old on November 9th, 1823 in Radcliffe.
