James was born on August 12th, 1797 in Redvales and his baptism took place on September 18th, 1797 at Bury Silver Street (Presbyterian).¹

Birth Notes

James' father was Richard Mather and his mother was Betty (Elizabeth) Barlow. His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Ingram. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Hardy, John, William, Rachel, Ellen, Sally and Martha. He was the third oldest of the eight children.
