Hardy's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Betty (Elizabeth) Barlow.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Ingram. He had three brothers and four sisters, named James, John, William, Rachel, Ellen, Sally and Martha.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 53 in September 1849 in Prestwich.  He was buried on September 27th, 1849 in Prestwich.²
