James was born in December 1873 in Darwen.¹

Birth Notes

James' father was Charles Mather and his mother was Esther Lomax. His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Jane Entwistle. He had six brothers and two sisters, named John, Charles, William, Amos, Andrew, James, Jane and Deborah. He was the second youngest of the nine children. He died as an infant at 6 months old in June 1874 in Darwen.¹
