James was born in 1836 in Preston.¹ James' father was Robert Mather and his mother was Nancy (Ann) Turner. His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Nanny (Ann) Miner. He had two sisters named Elizabeth and Alice. He had an adopted brother named Thomas.
