Ernest's father was Harry Clifton Mather and his mother was Eliza Taylor. His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Machin; his maternal grandparents were James Taylor and Elizabeth Southall. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Harry, William, Harold, Edith and Ethel. He was the fifth oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 74 in 1978 in Sheffield.
