Edith's father was Harry Clifton Mather and her mother was Eliza Taylor. Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Machin; her maternal grandparents were James Taylor and Elizabeth Southall. She had four brothers and a sister, named Harry, William, Harold, Ernest and Ethel. She was the oldest of the six children.
