Ellis was born in December 1843 in Little Hulton and his baptism took place on January 28th, 1844 at St. Mary (Ellenbrook).1 2  Ellis' father was Ellis Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Cook.  His paternal grandparents were Ellis Mather and Ann Thornley. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Charles, Thomas, Ann, Frances and Ellen.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
