Edward was born in April 1858 in Bolton and his baptism took place there on September 4th, 1859.1 2  Edward's father was William Mather and his mother was Betsy Kay.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Margaret Tyldsley. He had two brothers and five sisters, named William, James, Sarah, Alice, Ann, Elizabeth and Hannah.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at 8 months old in December 1858 in Manchester.1
