Alice was born in 1860 in Manchester.¹ Alice's father was William Mather and her mother was Betsy Kay. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Margaret Tyldsley. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Edward, William, James, Sarah, Ann, Elizabeth and Hannah. She was the third oldest of the eight children.
