Charles was born in 1877 in Little Bolton.1  Charles' father was Charles Mather and his mother was Betty Crompton.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Mather and Ann Brambley. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Henry, John, Joseph, Rachel, Mary and Hannah.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
