Andrew's father was Amos Mather and his mother was Emma Walsh. His paternal grandparents were Charles Mather and Esther Lomax. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Richard, Esther and Elizabeth. He was the second oldest of the five children. He died in 1889 in Darwen.¹
