Catherine's father was Richard Mann and her mother was Mary Pendlebury. Her maternal grandparents were Albert Pendlebury and Catherine Dowd. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Clifford, Jack, Richard, William, Bernard, Bernard, Iris and Mary. She was the oldest of the ten children.
