Mary was born in December 1858 in Darcy Lever and her baptism took place on January 16th, 1859 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Mary's father was John Openshaw Lomax and her mother was Margaret Bradley.  Her paternal grandparents were James Lomax and Betty Mather. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Alfred, John, Louisa, Martha, Eva and Elizabeth.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
