John was illegitimate (as shown on marriage). He was not the son of James Lomax and Betty Mather, as their children we legitimate and baptised.
General Notes
WARNING: Something odd here: John changed his name from Lomax to Openshaw. This implies his father was Openshaw and mother Lomax and they never married. The marriage confirms this.
27 Apr 1853, John Lomax married Margaret Bradley of Tong at St Peter's Bolton.
John and Margered included "Openshaw" in 6 of their 7 children's names, (all registered as LOMAX+BRADLEY) and by 1871 they were known as John and Margaret Openshaw. For Elizabeth Ann's 1863 baptism he is named "John Openshaw Lomax"
In 1861, John Lomax (born Tonge) and Margaret (29 & 31) were at Darcey Lever.
In 1871, John and Margaret Openshaw (39 & 40) were at Radcliffe with Emily, Elizabeth Ann, Alfred and Johnh James.
