Martha was born in March 1857 in Tonge-with-Haulgh and her baptism took place on March 8th, 1857 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Martha's father was John Lomax and her mother was Margaret Bradley. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Alfred, John, Louisa, Mary, Eva and Elizabeth.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
