Thomas' father was Thomas Lewis and his mother was Susannah (Hannah) Dean. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Lewis and Elizabeth Williams. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, James, Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah. He was the second youngest of the six children.
