Joseph's father was Thomas Lewis and his mother was Susannah (Hannah) Dean. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Lewis and Elizabeth Williams. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, James, Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah. He was the oldest of the six children.
