James was born in 1862 in Goldenhill.¹ James' father was Thomas Lewis and his mother was Susannah (Hannah) Dean. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Lewis and Elizabeth Williams. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah. He was the youngest of the six children.
