Mary's father was Robert Lewis and her mother was Eliza Roycroft. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Lewis and Mary Mullock. She had three brothers named Robert, Thomas and James. She was the youngest of the four children.

- In 1954, "Mary E Lewis" (67) was a teacher at Porthcawl, sailing to Montreal, Canada. She was returning to live in Wales.
