Emma was born in June 1886 in Bolton.1  Emma's father was Joseph Lee and her mother was Mary Ellen Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Robert Mather (Cunliffe) and Alice Heaton. She had three brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Robert, Albert and Emily.  She was the oldest of the five children.
