Christian was born in 1782 in Turton and her baptism took place on May 26th, 1782 at St. Anne (Turton). Christian's father was John Knowles and her mother was Hannah (Anna) Mather. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Henry, Benjamin, John, Jennet, Alice, Peggy, Hannah, Mally and Elizabeth.  She was the seventh oldest of the ten children.
