Benjamin's father was John Knowles and his mother was Hannah (Anna) Mather. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named Henry, John, Jennet, Alice, Peggy, Hannah, Christian, Mally and Elizabeth. He was the sixth oldest of the ten children. He died at the age of 12 in January 1791 in Turton. His burial was on January 13th, 1791.²
