Bert's father was Benjamin (Ben) Kenney and his mother was Harriet Ellen Nixon. His paternal grandparents were John Kenney and Elizabeth Bennett. He had two brothers and a sister, named Benjamin, George and Lissie. He was the second youngest of the four known children.
